Application
Veterinary Practice
Equine and small-animal imaging — hoof, fetlock and distal-limb work alongside small-animal scans.
Why it works
The setup.
In horses, the diagnostic question usually sits in the distal limb. In a 235-horse lameness series, forelimb lameness was the most common presentation and 79.4% of it originated in the distal region — exactly where radiography and ultrasound reach their limit.
An open-gauge permanent-magnet system at 0.25–0.3T reaches that region with dedicated coils: a hoof coil, a fetlock coil, and body coils sized for small animals. Standing low-field MRI is the configuration veterinary practice settled on — the published literature puts it at 0.27T and notes that it requires sedation only, where high-field imaging requires general anaesthesia.
- A small modular enclosure rather than a full shielded room.
- Single-phase power and, in most sites, no floor reinforcement.
- Permanent magnet — no liquid helium, no cryogenic service.
- AI reconstruction and assisted reading to support sites without an on-staff radiologist.

0.27T
is the established field strength for standing equine low-field MRI. Standing systems require sedation only; high-field imaging requires general anaesthesia.
